Harley
Ashbaugh
Harley's interest in the arts and design began early in life. He attributes
his father (and the invaluable hands-on training his Dad provided by allowing
Harley to assist in his machine shop) for the inspiration which eventually
developed into his passion for architectural woodworking design and fabrication.
Ashbaugh began his formal training in design at The
Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)
after being awarded a Portfolio scholarship by the school's Admissions
Department. While attending SCAD, Harley worked as a custom woodworker
for Intermarine Savannah as well as a kitchen designer for a local business--jobs
providing valuable hands-on learning experience in different types of woodworking.
Following his graduation from SCAD in 2002 (with a major in Interior Design
and a minor in Furniture Design), Harley worked as an outside sales/design
consultant for a custom cabinet company before associating with Bill Owens
(owner of Architectural Woodworking and Design--see Tribute below) in 2003.
Work produced by Harley and AWD has been featured in Southern
Accents, South Magazine,
Savannah
Magazine, and Atlanta
Homes and Lifestyles.
According
to Harley, "I have a great crew of guys behind me who make up an integral
part of the company. We work well as a team, and I could not accomplish
what I do without their help, support, and dedication." |

TRIBUTE
TO Bill Owens
(1944-2008)
|
Bill
Owens
was a mentoring friend who treated me like a son. A master in the field
of architectural woodworking design, Bill instructed me in ways my college
degree did not. Always sharing with me his dreams and vision for the company
launched, Bill often told me that he was training me to one day "carry
on" the company he started to the "next level." However, I had no
idea that time would come so soon or that, when it did, Bill would no longer
be available to provide the guidance I valued.
It is still difficult to realize my friend /mentor/ business partner is
gone. However, my relationship with Bill's son and siblings remains a close
one, and I stay in contact with them. Each has been assured by me
that I will always revere Bill's memory and will endeavor to
continue his work with the same dedication and work ethic Bill modeled
for me.
Note:
Bill
Owens was the proprietor of Architectural Woodworking ? Design in
Savannah,
GA
until
his death in 2008.
